Hi everyone, my name is Kiisa Daniel, I am 19 years old, I am a young journalist and advocate for children majoring in the rights of the girl child, I am one of the few youths who have benefited something from media in this digital era.
I got exposed to media fully in 2020 when I joined the HSC media, it was quite challenging at first since I had not yet been exposed to the computer world where I had a new companion from the world unseen. My journey was quite interesting from the start since I got to discover a lot of things from different people around the world who were using the same platforms, I personally didn’t know that there were other children who existed in different parts of Africa and that they too had a number of hurdles they were facing in their daily lives.
They too had different ideas on how to stop different cases of Child Abuse in their countries including government involvement, this alone was the genesis of my critical reasoning that many people take paramount.
Now many of you may get confused about which sites I was using. It was simply googling since it had a simple graphical user interface, so it was much simpler to use and understand due to its user-friendly options and great use of imagery like icons that were pretty simple to understand.
Social Media helped me get reliable information on statistics of children undergoing different psychological issues in different nations due to Child Abuse, this alone helped me give correct numbers in terms of speech during the different meetings we held with High sound media.
Social media helped me market myself and talent in speech by helping me win a golden medal in public speech in central Uganda competitions in 2023 and this alone gave me an opportunity to get free media mentorship with Bridging the Experiential Divide, Courtesy of UBC and an upcoming contract with an amazing channel that I will publish in my next article.
Of course, there have been challenges with social media. One scenario I can remember is when I and 4 of my friends were having a meeting with a renowned Ugandan politician residing in Germany, a hacker decided to play pornographic content via our zoom meeting, unfortunately, that was where our meeting ended, and it caused us a big loss since we were publishing our first joint poetry book and we had incurred some funds, But finally it was launched last year,.
All in all, media can be a safe space for children under strict supervision and personal discipline due to the hazardous vices and poisonous sites that are ready to devour the next generation.
